Security infrastructure to promote peace nationwide

Between 2015-2022, crime rates in Guyana have reduced to a significant 20 per cent. This is due to the commitment of public and private sector security initiatives aimed at emergency and rescue assurance procedures. In the 2023 National Budget, it was revealed that the Ministry of Home Affairs most major investments are underpinned by the procurement of assets for agencies in the security sector and nationwide peace-oriented programmes. In this regard, the Government of Guyana has allocated $500 million to procure vehicles for the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to increase its fleet alongside the addition of the ‘Increase the Peace’ programme. As the Defence Force is part of Guyana’s largest security segment, Minister Robeson Benn highlighted, ““We’re talking about putting in the new prison infrastructure that we’re building at Lusignan school, a new health centre, women’s prison…we’re talking about having education for them, we’re talking about a release programme called ‘fresh start’ to enable them to move to gainful employment, rehabilitation in society and with their families.” In total, $58.6 billion has been allocated in budget 2023 to strengthen the security sector.
