Revolutionizing Water Transport: MV MA Lisha Emerges as a ‘Game Changer’

During an appreciation luncheon held to mark the arrival of the new $2.5 billion (US$12.7M) MV MA Lisha, Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill referred to the vessel as a game changer in water transportation in Guyana. The minister highlighted the vessel's anticipated critical role in improving transportation, trade, and tourism between Georgetown and the North West district. According to Minister Edghill, the MV MA Lisha, built by Indian company Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, will significantly transform water transportation in Guyana. The vessel's faster speed will allow residents of Region One to travel home more quickly, reducing travel time by 6 to 8 hours. Additionally, the vessel has special features to address common travel challenges and can carry a large quantity of produce in its 10 x 10 containers, potentially lowering the price of goods. With a capacity of 276 passengers, 18 crew members, 14 sedan-type vehicles, and two trucks, the ferry will ply the Barima-Waini/Georgetown route. Furthermore, the MV MA Lisha's 70-meter-long beam will offer seating as comfortable as business class on an airline, complete with air conditioning and ample legroom. This comfortable and safe travel experience will be especially beneficial for women, senior citizens, pregnant mothers, and children. In addition, the VIP cabins will allow individuals to travel with their cars and SUVs to the North West district. Minister Deodat Indar of the Ministry of Public Works emphasized that the vessel is classified by the American Bureau of Shipping, a testament to its quality, durability, and reliability. The vessel's classification puts it in the same league as those used in the oil and gas sector, underscoring its quality and haul. Minister Indar stressed the importance of treating the vessel with care to maintain its quality. The MV MA Lisha offers online booking for passengers with different needs and preferences, marking a significant step towards modernizing water transportation in Guyana. The vessel's name, meaning friendship in the native Warrau language, reflects its connection to improved services and its focus on providing a pleasant travel experience.
