New systems implemented to expedite water transport

The Transport and Harbours Department recently announced that in 2023, the entity is looking to establish faster checks and scanning systems among other technology-enabled protocols to improve water transport. This accompanies the launch of the $6.8 million online ticket booking system for water transport: the ‘Ferry Pass’, through which onboarding time has reduced tremendously. This was made wary of the public by Chair of the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD), Advisory Council, Rosalinda Rasul. “We needed to make sure a system was created that allows for not just transparency but fairness in the way that everybody is able to get that equal opportunity to go onto the ferry. So, when the ferry pass was developed and launched it sought to eliminate all of that. Now three months later, we achieved our objective of eliminating those problems,” she stated. The Transport and Harbours Department is further aiming to synchronise weight scales to an app which transits data allowing for cashiers to make transactions. This is followed by the introduction of a payment booth near the scales to allow for transactions to be processed faster. The onboarding process will involve the use of a voice-over system to boost broadcast safety protocols and inform of arrivals and departures upon tourist destinations and sites.
