National human resources plan being developed to meet local skills deficit
Given the high demand for skilled labour to support Guyana's ambitious development agenda, President Irfaan Ali has announced the development of a human resources plan to upskill Guyanese for 2030 and beyond. "We have already recognised that we have a deficit. We do not have enough people in the workforce; we don't have in the quality and in the quantity and in the skillset," President Ali submitted while addressing the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Business Development Forum recently. Work has commenced on the Guyana Technical Training College in Port Mourant, Region 6 which targets individuals for the oil and gas sector and broader economic sectors including hospitality and construction. This is a joint initiative between Stabroek Block operator ExxonMobil and the government of Guyana. Another component of the human resources plan is the training of 150, 000 Guyanese in software development, through a partnership with the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). "The new Silica City will have an entire module that focuses on innovation, research and development and technology," he added.
