Modernisation of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to create national peace and security
The Guyana Defence Force is currently under a ‘modernisation and readiness enhancement programme,’ aimed at strengthening territorial oneness, heritage and assets. According to President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, “The Guyana Defence Force could look forward to continued capital investment to help better police our territorial waters, and exclusive economic zone, our borders and our territory.” To concur, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, at the opening of the GDF annual Officers’ Conference, Base Camp Ayanganna, stated that US $30 billion in Sultan Investment in the EEZ will generate significant revenues which will be allocated to socioeconomic development measures. In this regard, the programme will introduce a modern air corps and coast guard while considerations are taken to determine the addition of aircraft and runways. In pursuit of this, the GDF is undergoing capacity building which in turn will bolster state security.
