Largest Dredger Ever in Guyana Arrives at Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase

M.V. Galileo Galilei, sailing under the flag of Luxembourg, is a hopper dredger built in 2021. Under the control and ownership by a joint venture between Jan De Nul Group and NRG Holdings is currently en route from the Port of Georgetown to its project location. This project is the ongoing construction of an artificial island upon which the new oil and gas terminal will be resting, with an added 44 acres of land to the coastline. Initially, the access channel of the Demerara river was dredged, and the nautical landforms surrounding, widened. Berth pockets near quays and swinging basins were part of this phase. The Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base Inc. mentioned yesterday that the docking of the ship was the introduction of the sand key reclamation phase of the project. This access channel will soon be handed over to the maritime administration department (MARAD). The 167m. long, 36m. wide body, with a carrying capacity of 31227 deadweight tonnage, availed itself to the beach expansion project in Brazil, and will be part of the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) link to the Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) projects. With the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base Inc. (VESHI) being the alliance between NRG Holdings Inc., a fully Guyanese-owned consortium with majority shares, and Jan De Nul, a Belgium international maritime infrastructure company, it is the largest private sector investment worth over US$300 million expected to be operationalised in 2023.
