Information and Communication Technology advancements to enable socioeconomic empowerment in the Caribbean

This year’s CANTO 39th. Annual General Meeting, conference and mini trade exhibition held in Paramaribo, Suriname, was held under the theme, “Fostering a Resilient Datasphere for All!” This forum, having gathered telecom operators, policy makers, and regulators marks the initiation of the “connected Caribbean," set to create digital connectivity and inclusion. At this high-level event, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillip posited, “We are cognisant that this vision of prosperity calls for the all-around development of our people through capacity building, access to information and ensuring their safety and security. All of this calls for eliminating inequalities and their adverse effects as we seek to deliver equitable benefits for all of our people.” To this regard, it was highlighted that CANTO’s members can explore the development of the range of technologies and the degree to which internet connectivity, broadband and computing are implemented. This is part and parcel of national sustainability which was deemed to not be without the support of regional governmental bodies who strive to achieve the “connected Caribbean.”
