Impressive Results Await as Guyana Invests in Education
Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, expressed that Guyana is experiencing significant investments in infrastructure, training, and research to ensure the local education system can withstand future challenges. Minister Manickchand posited her confidence that the children of Guyana will excel in their upcoming exams, including the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). The minister made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the National Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Fair at the Cyril Potter College of Education in Turkeyen on Monday. Despite the numerous challenges faced by the country over the past two years, particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the education ministry remained committed to providing learning opportunities through various means such as distributing printed worksheets, broadcasting additional television programmes, and offering radio-based learning. These praiseworthy initiatives ensured that the nation's children remained competitive, with some even achieving top positions within the Caribbean region. In 2020 and 2021, several students in Guyana achieved impressive scores on their exams. Once again, in 2022, Guyanese students performed exceptionally well on the CSEC and CAPE exams, with some passing over 20 subjects. Students were recognized for their achievements in natural science, technical and vocational studies, humanities, sciences, and business. Despite these successes, Minister Manickchand emphasized that the government remains committed to doing even more for the education sector. The ministry aims to have 100% of teachers trained by 2025 to support the sector's transformation. Additionally, the government is providing textbooks to all children in nursery, primary, and secondary schools by September of this year.
