Implementation of new data legislation to position Guyana as prominent ICT business hub

The government is making a concentrated effort to develop groundbreaking legislation that encompasses the entire business environment, particularly data centers. The government has established stringent timelines for finalizing the legislation and aims to present it to the National Assembly by the conclusion of quarter one of 2023. On Tuesday, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized that the rapid implementation of the legal system is timely as Guyana strives to be at the forefront of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and associated services. He posited, “By the time we get to 2027, I’m convinced that we will have the most modern legal architecture to support any type of development in the region, and around the world. That is because we are building a system that is taking the best available legislation [and] regulation.” The Head of State highlighted that establishing a resilient ecosystem for ICT and business-related services relies heavily on creating an environment that is reinforced by legislation and political support. The president emphasized the significance of data centers in the plan and expressed the government's enthusiasm towards legislation that fosters the expansion of data centers nationwide. A crucial factor in establishing a thriving ecosystem for ICT and business-related services is the establishment of an environment supported by legislation and political determination. He emphasized the importance of data centers in the overall plan, and the government is therefore committed to enacting legislation that will facilitate the growth of these centers throughout the nation. The government also acknowledges that investing in human resources is critical for the success of the mission to create a leading destination for ICT and related services. This investment will ensure that individuals have the necessary skills and tools to operate effectively in the new environment.
