Guyana's Unwavering Commitment: Forging Powerful Partnerships to Champion Climate and Environment Initiatives
Guyana is embarking on collaborative ventures with both regional and international partners to underscore its formidable leadership in the realm of climate and environment. Notably, the country's distinguished role in climate security and other critical areas will assume a prominent spotlight at the upcoming Conference of Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the United Arab Emirates this December. H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized Guyana's dedication to sustainability and climate action, evident in national policies and engagement with international entities. National priority areas will be discussed in forthcoming meetings of the multi-stakeholder committee of the LCDS. In recent years, the country has established itself as a global leader in climate and environmental discussions through fruitful collaborations with development partners. President Ali highlighted the European Union's focused commitment on climate and environment in their programme for Guyana over the next five years. Several signed programmes, encompassing mangroves, community livelihoods, and forest governance, underscore this dedication. Additionally, he announced upcoming meetings with the President of the European Union to explore further collaboration, a testament to Guyana's successful foreign policy. Moreover, the country's network with the British Government has resulted in the formulation of a maritime economy plan, showcasing its proactive approach to climate and environmental matters. Collaborations with the United States, especially in energy and environment sectors, have allowed Guyana to tap into expertise and resources for accelerated sustainable development. Addressing regional food security within CARICOM remains a key priority in Guyana's climate and environment programme. President Ali envisions Guyana as a model for effective international collaboration, emphasizing collective action to tackle global challenges.
