Guyana Tourism Authority to enhance hospitality and tourism service quality via training programs

In March 2023, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) underwent several training exercises to improve the quality of service in the country's tourism sector. The training covered various aspects of tourism and hospitality practices, including First Aid and CPR, mixology, providing exceptional service, and health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) practices. As a result, Guyana's tourism industry is expected to benefit from enhanced service quality. In Paruima Village, Region Seven, 23 individuals were trained in practical and theoretical First Aid & CPR techniques to ensure that the community is well-prepared to handle emergency situations. Following the successful completion of the first training program, a second iteration was conducted in the Essequibo areas. The training was conducted by Melisa Alstrom, an experienced first responder and trainer from the Guyana Training College for International Skills (GTCIS). In Linden, Region 10, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) collaborated with the tourism committee to conduct a mixology training session led by Chetnauth Persaud of the GTA and Anil Singh, an experienced bartender. The training covered various aspects of mixology, including different types of bartending, selecting ingredients, garnishing drinks, measuring and pouring techniques, and presentation skills. The training also included courses on customer service practices, time management, communication, and how to remain calm under pressure. In the Aruwai Resort White H2O, 14 participants underwent the delivering quality service session led by Marlon George, a master trainer from the GTA. The goal of the training was to enhance the quality of customer service provided within the region. The training covered various areas, including the significance of customer service, proper etiquette, and hospitality techniques, to ensure that all guests receive top-notch service that meets local and international standards. In addition, a similar session was conducted in Region Two, with 26 individuals trained in the same areas by Chetnauth Persaud, GTA's Training and Product Development Officer. The GTA, in collaboration with the Centre for Local Business Development (CLBD), held an HSSE training program that benefited representatives from hotel accommodations, interior lodges, resorts, tour operators, and tour guides. The participants were educated on hazard recognition and controls, risk assessment, risk management, and incident management. Furthermore, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs’ Youth Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Programme conducted a one-week introduction to tourism training for 62 Community Service Officers (CSOs) from the ten administrative regions. The training covered various aspects of tourism development, including customer service, understanding visitor needs and expectations, and developing tourism experiences. The first group visited Surama Eco Lodge, and the second group visited Rewa Eco Lodge, where they were able to interact with the staff, experience the surroundings, and learn more about their community-based tourism development model. The GTA facilitated the training, which was executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
