Guyana poised to become regional leader in food, energy, and climate security

In a diasporic engagement with the Bahamas, His Excellency President Dr. Irfaan Ali posited that Guyanese extend leadership as it relates to food security, energy security, and climate security. According to His Excellency, “ The next seven years are dedicated to building an economy and a country that will be able to efficiently and competitively survive in a global system that will be very, very different from what we see today.” In this light, he referenced the administration’s policy and developmental focus in areas involving agriculture and healthcare, near the midst of the 44th. Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government of the CARICOM Community. It is with this, that Guyana aims not to be a passive, but active leader in food, energy and climate development plans as it represents national initiatives toward the green economy’s growth. This is among the agreement between the Government of Guyana and Hess Corporation for the sale of carbon credits valued at US$750 million. In addition to this opportunity, Guyana and Rwanda are looking to create a value-added industry of pharmaceuticals and the country’s forest. Further, the energy-related and extractive industries may benefit from collaboration with Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago for the development of the energy corridor. This comes at an opportune time, as His Excellency stated as per his conversation with the Chairwoman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, “...they are in the final stages of wrapping up things to lend the resources for the first natural gas pipeline and natural gas plant for Guyana. This is easily the largest investment in the energy sector and in any single project in the history of Guyana.”
