Guyana gains backing from GRULAC for its candidacy in the United Nations Security Council
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, held a meeting with the Permanent Representatives of the Group of Latin America and Caribbean States (GRULAC) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During the meeting, Minister Todd presented Guyana's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2024-2025 term, and shared the country's vision and priorities once elected. Additionally, Minister Todd expressed gratitude to the Permanent Representatives for their governments' support of Guyana's candidacy. The election is scheduled to take place on June 6, 2023, in New York. In his presentation, Minister Todd emphasized that the Latin America and Caribbean community has made significant contributions to global peace and security, notably through the establishment of the region as a Zone of Peace. Moreover, the Minister pointed out that countries of all sizes from the region, both past and present members of the Council, have demonstrated that the region has a considerable impact in this area, beyond what one would expect based on its size and resources. The Minister also outlined several crucial issues that Guyana would focus on as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. These include addressing climate change, food insecurity, and conflict; protecting children affected by armed conflict; promoting the role of youth in maintaining peace and security; advancing the agenda of women, peace, and security; and strengthening peacebuilding and conflict prevention efforts. he Minister expressed gratitude to the members of GRULAC who offered to share their Council experiences and stressed that Guyana's term on the Council would be a continuation of the region's efforts towards peace and security, rather than a mere national achievement. He emphasized the significance of the United Nations Charter and the role of multilateralism in protecting the independence and security of small states like Guyana. Currently, two of the ten non-permanent Council seats are allocated to GRULAC, held by Brazil and Ecuador. Guyana submitted its candidacy to GRULAC in 2011 and is the sole candidate from the region for the vacant seat. All thirty-two members of GRULAC have confirmed their support for Guyana's candidacy.
