Guyana Coders Initiative to transform Information and Communication Technology Sector

The Government of Guyana, together with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) inaugurated their commitment to the Guyana Coders Initiative which will benefit 150 000 Guyanese in computer programming education and training. This initiative was launched on Wednesday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC). According to His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, "“This step is about you taking our country forward in 2030 and beyond, ensuring that you are competitive, resilient, functional… ensuring that we as a country have the tools that will take us forward, and our economy is among the strongest." In this light, His Excellency, Abdulla Lootah, Director General of the Office of the Prime Minister of UAE, stated, "Our collaboration is also pivotal because it embodies one collective vision by both nations in exchanging government experiences with impactful outcomes.” As part of computer programming, coding translates human input into numerical sequences that computers then use to instruct machines to perform specific functions. The bilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2022, led to the unveiling of the Guyana Coders Initiative website launched yesterday, which offers students a platform to become software developers with learning tracks from data science fundamentals, android kotlin, and data analysis. These programmes are delivered by technical partners Udacity, and Dubai Future Foundation. In the local talent acquisition and management sphere, Guyana may potentially be a technology hub for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as this initiative begins to prepare hundreds of thousands of Guyanese to participate in the projected labour force globally, of 45 million by 2030. In addition, the Guyana Coders Initiative will support skills training associated with other technological advancements executed, such as the launch of the first telehealth and telemedicine app, Health First, earlier this year. These skills will also be transferable in the scattered ICT hubs across Guyana, the Ministry of Education's 'Smart Classroom' initiative, and Silica City, the country’s first smart city in the pipelines.
