Guyana-China relations remain visionary as economic cooperation is lauded
The relationship between the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and the People’s Republic of China is viewed as consistently progressive given the wealth of opportunity and economic generosity aimed to bring infrastructural and social development to the Guyanese population. Guyana-China relations have been prosperous for over fifty years and counting, where the two nations have enjoyed sociopolitical cooperation, economic alliance, healthcare initiatives, human resources management and capacity development, and people-to-people (P2P) diplomacy. Reiterated during a signing ceremony last Friday for the framework agreement, providing for a concessional loan to finance phase two of the East Coast Demerara Road Project worth US$192 million, was this flourishing relationship. According to Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, road network projects facilitated by China flow into different kinds of investments, further enhancing industrialisation and domestic job creation. This project involves the conversion of the existing East Coast Demerara Road from Belfield to Orange Nassau into a four-lane highway, extending the main East Coast Roadway from Orange Nassau to Mahaica. In addition, the East Coast Embankment Road will be rehabilitated from Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau to cater for extended lanes. This project will also see the construction of 48 bridges, 22 culverts, and an additional bridge over the Hope Canal. Just recently, CNOOC Petroleum Guyana and POWERCHINA donated a complete solar lighting community system to Moraikobai, the only indigenous village in Region Five, thereon completing the Solar Light Community Project. In addition, GYD $4 million to the Guyana Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to aid in the National Disaster Relief Effort was granted, reflecting China’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, environmental resilience, and economic improvement of the livelihoods of its partners.
