Guatemala Plans to Strengthen Ties with Guyana by Opening Embassy in Georgetown

Ambassador María Luisa Ramírez, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, and Mr. Robert Persaud, the Foreign Secretary, discussed the upcoming establishment of a Guatemalan embassy in Georgetown and explored opportunities for collaboration between the two countries. During the meeting, the Foreign Secretary emphasized the significance of earlier talks between the presidents of Guyana and Guatemala regarding crucial areas of collaboration between the two countries. The Foreign Secretary reiterated Guyana's dedication to these priority sectors, which comprise technical assistance for the Sugar Industry, cooperation in the fields of Oil and Gas, Tourism, Food Security, and Climate Change. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Ambassador María Luisa Ramírez, underscored her country's unwavering commitment to enhanced collaboration with Guyana, particularly in expanding and strengthening trade relations between the two nations. She further highlighted the vital role of CARICOM in the region and acknowledged the significance of Guyana as the headquarters of the regional organization. As part of her visit to Guyana, Vice Minister Ramírez is engaging in productive discussions on several areas of mutual interest while also undertaking preliminary work to establish a Diplomatic Mission in Guyana. The establishment of a Guatemalan Embassy in Guyana, which is slated to be operational in the third quarter of 2023, will be a significant milestone in the 31-year diplomatic relations between the two countries. This will be the first Guatemalan Diplomatic Mission in the CARICOM region, underscoring the importance of deepening bilateral ties with Guyana and the wider Caribbean community.
