Frankfurt Zoological Society vows to protect Guyana’s Kanuku Mountains

Since 2014, the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), established 2011, has been advised by the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) within the establishment of the administration and management of the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area. In this regard, the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area, was ensured its preservation through routine monitoring plans and biodiversity surveys, and the involvement of regional planning agencies, indigenous communities, and conservation organisations. Kasia Rabel, writer for the FZS in 2021, stated, “This protected area spans nearly 3% of Guyana within a part of the country considered to be the most ecologically diverse. KMPA encompasses a whole intact rainforest ecosystem including 1000-meter high mountains. Here over 1400 vertebrate species have been counted so far, including tapirs, jaguars, the world’s largest eagle, the harpy, and more.” Its mission to protect this biodiversity was strengthened today by the inking of a five-year agreement to continue their work in shielding against threats of illegal mining, organising ranger patrols, producing high-resolution satellite data for early detection of illegal activities, wildlife population monitoring, and execution of nature camps. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today at the Herdmanston Lodge Hotel, will see the FZS fulfilling its commitment to resilience-based ecosystem stewardship, and land ethics.
