Electronic medical records (EMR) legislation in the works

With the emergence of telehealth and smart healthcare facilities, the Ministry of Health is focused on building and maintaining a modernised healthcare system all-round. With that, the Ministry of Health seeks to develop and implement legislation for electronic medical records (EMR) in Guyana. EMR systems surround the organisation of patients’ history stored in a digital format. In this regard, healthcare records can be shared among the healthcare facility’s network with enterprise-wide information These records may cover demographics, medication and allergies, immunisation status, laboratory test results, radiology images, vital signs, personal statistics, and billing information. Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, on a visit to Region Two recently, stated, “One of the things that we’ve already started working on is to make sure that by some time next year, we’ll be able to pass the relevant laws to allow for digital or electronic record systems but to also create the legislative environment to ensure that these records and people’s information are kept safe.” To this effect, the telemedicine programme, within the pilot stage, is accessible to four remote communities in Region Nine, namely Gunns Village, Nappi, Yupukari and Parikawarinau. Thereon, the Registered Nursing (RN) programme is anticipated to be launched in 2023, where 1000+ nurses will be trained to close the gap among shortages in the profession.
