Construction progress of $413M Leguan stelling exceeds expectations since 2018 commencement

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, stated on Wednesday that the construction of the Leguan Stelling, which commenced in 2018 at a value of $413 million, is making remarkable progress. Although the end is in sight, the Minister believes that work needs to be expedited. The contract is set to expire in June, and the minister urged the contractor to increase the workforce to complete the project promptly. While acknowledging that progress has not been as fast as desired, the current status is still a significant improvement over the previous situation. The Leguan Stelling project involves the expansion of the stelling platform by constructing a new reinforced concrete section adjacent to the existing structure. This new section will be supported by 228 pre-stressed concrete piles and will measure 160 ft. by 130 ft. To enhance functionality, a new link-span bridge will be integrated into the structure. This feature will facilitate the docking of the ferry, unloading of goods, and boarding and disembarking of passengers and vehicles. Safety measures will be implemented, including lighting and safety rails on both the rehabilitated intersection and the reinforced concrete northern extension of the stelling. Additionally, an admin building will be built for the Transport and Harbours Department staff to oversee the operations. The rehabilitation of the timber carriageway has been finished, which included the replacement of weakened foundation piles. Other repairs were also carried out on the carriageway, such as replacing damaged timber components like capping beams, bed planks, and running strips. Work on the southern part of the timber extension has been completed. The current construction focus is on finishing the reinforced concrete deck on the northern section before installing the link-span bridge and unit-float pontoon. The introduction of the link-span bridge system will provide better accommodation for vehicles.
